About Sweden

Sweden has 25 provinces and about 10,605,529 people (2025) on 409,629 km² (158,159 sq mi). Stockholm is both the capital and the largest city, with 1,652,895 people (2023). It borders Norway and Finland.

Uppland is the most populous province (1,785,042 people) and Härjedalen the least (10,039); Lapland is the largest by area (109,143 km²) and Öland the smallest (1,344 km²).

Sweden's provinces (landskap) are its historical regions, older than the counties (län) that replaced them as units of government in 1634. They have no capitals or administrations of their own, and their borders often differ from the counties': Stockholm lies in Uppland, though its southern districts are in Södermanland. They live on in coats of arms, dialects and local identity, and are grouped into three lands (landsdelar): Götaland in the south, with 10 provinces, Svealand, with 6, and Norrland in the north, with 9.

Sweden's 25 provinces (landskap) have had no administrative role since the counties replaced them in the 17th century, and Statistics Sweden publishes no figures for them: their populations are estimates, the population on 31 December 2025 of SCB's demographic statistical areas (DeSO) summed by the province each lies in. Towns are SCB's localities (tätorter), continuous built-up areas of at least 200 people, with their population on 31 December 2023. Since 2025 SCB adds a little random noise to each published figure to protect privacy, so the provinces add up to a few people more or less than Sweden's total.
