Which countries count?

A country counts when the euro is its official currency and sole legal tender. That is 27 countries: the 21 members of the eurozone, four microstates with a monetary agreement with the EU, and Montenegro and Kosovo, which adopted the euro on their own. Currencies pegged to the euro don’t count, and neither do overseas regions such as French Guiana or Réunion, which are part of France.

Often expected, but not on the list

  • Denmark: Denmark has an opt-out from the euro. The Danish krone is pegged to it, but it is a separate currency.
  • Sweden: Sweden is in the EU but has not joined the euro: it keeps the Swedish krona.
  • Poland: Poland is in the EU but has not joined the euro: it keeps the Polish złoty.
  • Czech Republic: Czechia is in the EU but has not joined the euro: it keeps the Czech koruna.
  • Hungary: Hungary is in the EU but has not joined the euro: it keeps the Hungarian forint.
  • Romania: Romania is in the EU but has not joined the euro: it keeps the Romanian leu.
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina: Bosnia and Herzegovina uses the convertible mark, which is pegged to the euro but is its own currency.
  • Switzerland: Switzerland is not in the EU and uses the Swiss franc.
  • Liechtenstein: Liechtenstein uses the Swiss franc, not the euro.
  • United Kingdom: The United Kingdom never joined the euro and uses the pound sterling.
