Population data and source

Uses population estimates from the archived CIA World Factbook, checked 14 September 2026. Reference years are mixed (the 2024 or 2025 estimate published for each country), so this ranks a fixed snapshot, not live counts. Other sources can swap close neighbours in the list.

Continents follow this site's continent quizzes: roughly the UN M49 regions, with Kosovo in Europe and Taiwan in Asia. Only independent countries are ranked, not dependent territories, and each country counts once, in one continent, with its whole area and population.

Russia and Turkey are counted in Europe, so they are not ranked here. Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are counted in Asia with their whole population.

Countries with exactly the same published figure share a rank. If a tie straddled the last place, every tied country would be accepted; none does in this snapshot.
