Area data and source

Uses total area (land plus water) in square kilometres from the archived CIA World Factbook, checked 14 September 2026, the same figures as our other country area quizzes. The CIA retired the Factbook in February 2026: this is a fixed historical dataset preserved in the CC0-licensed factbook.json archive, not a live 2026 survey.

Ranks the 197 countries of our world quizzes: the 193 UN member states plus Vatican City, Palestine, Kosovo and Taiwan. Dependent territories such as Greenland, Puerto Rico and Hong Kong are not ranked, and each country counts once, with its whole area and population.

France's total area includes its overseas regions (French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte and Réunion), as published in the Factbook.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, not an independent country, so it is not ranked, and Denmark's figure does not include it. With its 2,166,086 km² it would otherwise be 12th.

Morocco's figure (716,550 km²) includes Western Sahara, whose status is disputed.

Countries with exactly the same published figure share a rank. If a tie straddled the last place, every tied country would be accepted; none does in this snapshot.
