Learn Spain’s 17 autonomous communities
This quiz tests Spain’s first-level regions, not its 50 provinces. Catalonia, Andalusia and Castile and León are autonomous communities; Barcelona, Seville and León are provinces within them. You will also find single-province communities such as La Rioja and the Community of Madrid.
Start with Galicia in the northwest and Andalusia in the south, then place the two Castiles across the interior. Along the northern coast, work east from Asturias through Cantabria to the Basque Country.
Islands count too
The Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands in the Atlantic are both included. The Canary Islands are repositioned closer to the mainland on this map for readability; their real location is farther southwest, off the coast of northwestern Africa. Pan and zoom to explore the smaller islands. Ceuta and Melilla are autonomous cities, not autonomous communities, and are not answers in this 17-region round.
We use familiar English names where available: Andalusia is Andalucía, Catalonia is Cataluña or Catalunya, and Navarre is Navarra. The challenge is to recognise each area, rather than memorise a particular spelling.
How to play
Click the place named above the map. A correct first click earns three points; a second or third attempt earns two or one. After three mistakes, or if you skip, the answer highlights in red. Click it to continue and learn its position.
Use the zoom controls or pinch and drag for smaller areas. At the end, review the map, share your score or play again. Your best result is saved to My Progress.
