Learn South Africa’s nine provinces

South Africa’s provincial map ranges from the enormous Northern Cape to compact Gauteng. This quiz includes all nine provinces, with each province counting as one answer regardless of its size. Use the zoom controls when you need a closer look at Gauteng and the surrounding borders.

Start with the three Cape provinces: Western Cape in the southwest, Northern Cape to its north, and Eastern Cape along the southeastern coast. KwaZulu-Natal lies farther up the east coast, while Limpopo occupies the far north.

Connect provinces with familiar cities

Cape Town belongs to the Western Cape, Durban to KwaZulu-Natal, and Johannesburg and Pretoria to Gauteng. Bloemfontein helps locate the Free State in the interior. Those city connections can make unfamiliar provincial outlines easier to remember.

Lesotho is the separate country surrounded by South Africa, not a tenth province. The unfilled area around Lesotho is deliberately not an answer. Find all nine provinces, review any mistakes and replay to improve your first-try score.

The map focuses on mainland South Africa. The distant Prince Edward Islands are omitted so that the provincial borders remain easy to see on smaller screens.

How to play

Click the place named above the map. A correct first click earns three points; a second or third attempt earns two or one. After three mistakes, or if you skip, the answer highlights in red. Click it to continue and learn its position.

Use the zoom controls or pinch and drag for smaller areas. At the end, review the map, share your score or play again. Your best result is saved to My Progress.
