Find mainland Portugal’s 18 districts

This Portuguese districts quiz covers the 18 districts of mainland Portugal. The Azores and Madeira are autonomous regions, not mainland districts, and are outside this round. Districts are also different from Portugal’s statistical regions and its many municipalities.

Start in the north with Viana do Castelo, Braga and Porto along the coast, then locate Bragança and Vila Real inland. Work south past Aveiro, Coimbra and Leiria to Lisbon and Setúbal. Faro occupies the southern edge of the mainland.

Learn district names through familiar places

Districts share names with their principal cities, but each answer here is the whole district. Lisbon is Lisboa in Portuguese. Bragança, Évora, Santarém and Setúbal retain their Portuguese accents in the labels.

Use Beja and Évora as landmarks in the broad southern interior, then distinguish Portalegre, Castelo Branco and Guarda along the Spanish border. Start with ten districts or test all 18, and use the results map to revisit any missed borders.

How to play

Click the place named above the map. A correct first click earns three points; a second or third attempt earns two or one. After three mistakes, or if you skip, the answer highlights in red. Click it to continue and learn its position.

Use the zoom controls or pinch and drag for smaller areas. At the end, review the map, share your score or play again. Your best result is saved to My Progress.
