From coastal capitals to the Amazon

Explore the capitals of Peru’s twenty-four departments, from the Pacific coast through the Andes and into the Amazon. This set excludes Callao, which is a constitutional province rather than a department. Ten questions are selected by default, with all twenty-four available for a full round.

Learn the pairs that are not obvious from their names: Áncash uses Huaraz, Junín uses Huancayo, Lambayeque uses Chiclayo and La Libertad uses Trujillo. In the Amazon, Loreto pairs with Iquitos and Madre de Dios with Puerto Maldonado.

Department capitals, not every regional office

The Lima question asks for the department capital, Lima. This is distinct from Huacho, the seat of the Regional Government of Lima, whose jurisdiction excludes the province of Lima. The outline shows the department, and the marker points to Lima city.

San Martín’s capital is Moyobamba rather than the larger city of Tarapoto. Amazonas uses Chachapoyas and Ucayali uses Pucallpa. Accents are optional when typing, and both Cusco and Cuzco are accepted. Review missed capitals afterwards to strengthen the unfamiliar pairs.
