Learn New Zealand’s 16 regions

This quiz follows New Zealand’s 16 regional council areas, including regions administered by unitary authorities. The Chatham Islands sit outside these regions and are not an extra answer. Nelson and Tasman count separately, as do the neighbouring regions of Marlborough and Canterbury.

On the North Island, begin with Northland and Auckland, then work through Waikato and Bay of Plenty. Taranaki lies on the west coast, Hawke’s Bay on the east, and Wellington at the southern end. Gisborne and Manawatū-Whanganui complete the North Island set.

Connect the regions across the South Island

Look for Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough at the top of the South Island. West Coast stretches down the western side, while Canterbury and Otago lie to the east and southeast. Southland occupies the far south and includes Stewart Island / Rakiura.

The quiz tests regional areas, not just cities with the same names. Use zoom for compact Nelson, then try all 16 regions or a shorter ten-question round. Each first-try answer earns the maximum points.
