Go beyond Japan’s best-known cities
Connect each of Japan’s forty-seven prefectures with its capital or government seat. The full set runs from Hokkaido and Sapporo to Okinawa and Naha. Start with ten questions, then choose a longer round when you want a bigger challenge.
Many prefectures share their capital’s name, but the exceptions are worth learning: Aichi uses Nagoya, Kanagawa uses Yokohama, Hyogo uses Kobe and Miyagi uses Sendai. Use the outline and marker to build a location-based memory as well as a name pairing.
Prefectural capitals and the Tokyo exception
Tokyo is a metropolis rather than an ordinary prefecture. Its question is labelled as the metropolitan government seat and marks Shinjuku, where the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is based. Shinjuku and Tokyo are both accepted when typing. The Tokyo outline focuses on its mainland area so the marker remains easy to read.
Watch for Mie’s short capital name, Tsu, and the similar-looking names Matsue in Shimane and Matsuyama in Ehime. Macrons are optional: Kobe and Kōbe both work, as do Otsu and Ōtsu. Missed answers can be revisited through mistake practice.
