Learn Iran’s 31 provinces

Iran’s provinces are called ostans. This quiz covers all 31, including Alborz as a separate province from Tehran. Each answer is the whole administrative area, not a marker for a city that happens to share its name.

Use the Caspian coast to locate Gilan, Mazandaran and Golestan. Along the southern coast, distinguish Bushehr, Hormozgan and Sistan and Baluchestan. In the interior, Isfahan, Yazd and Kerman provide useful anchors for learning neighbouring provinces.

Separate the Khorasan and Azerbaijan provinces

North Khorasan, Razavi Khorasan and South Khorasan are three different answers. East Azerbaijan and West Azerbaijan are provinces within Iran, distinct from the neighbouring country of Azerbaijan. Kurdistan in this quiz refers specifically to the Iranian province.

English spellings vary: Isfahan is also written Esfahan, Ardabil as Ardebil, and Kurdistan as Kordestan. You only need to click the right area, not type its name. Start with ten provinces or choose all 31 for a full round.
