Learn Iceland’s eight statistical regions

This Icelandic regions quiz uses the eight-region statistical division, not electoral constituencies or tourism areas. Some travel guides group Iceland into seven destinations, so their labels and boundaries may differ from this map.

Begin with the Capital Region around Reykjavík and the Southern Peninsula, also called Suðurnes, nearby. These are separate answers despite both being in the southwest. West and the Westfjords are also distinct regions.

Follow the coast to build your mental map

From the Westfjords, continue around to Northwest, Northeast, East and South. Icelandic names you may recognise include Vestfirðir for the Westfjords, Austurland for East, and Suðurland for South. The quiz uses English region names to keep the prompts clear.

Every round includes all eight regions, making this a short map challenge. Zoom in if you need help distinguishing the two compact southwestern regions, and use the end-of-round map to review any mistakes.
