How it works, distances and sources
Every round hides three places, one in each of three columns picked at random. Type any place: it goes into its column with a temperature for how close it is to the hidden one there, from freezing to burning, and naming the hidden one reveals it. While you play you see only temperatures; the distance of every guess, in km, is shown when the round is over. A challenge link replays the same three hidden places.
Distances between countries are the shortest distance between their land, islands included, measured on the Natural Earth 1:50m country shapes, so neighbours are always burning. For the world quiz: burning is under 100 km (neighbours and narrow straits), hot under 500 km, warm under 1,000 km, cool under 2,000 km, cold under 3,500 km, and anything farther is freezing.
The columns are the continents of our other world quizzes, based on the UN geoscheme. Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cyprus, Egypt, Indonesia and Timor-Leste count in both of their continents: when both are in play, one guess gets a temperature in each. A country from a continent that is not in play this round simply gets a note.
Two of the hidden countries are well known and one, in a random column, is less known. Kosovo, Palestine and Taiwan, the countries that belong to two continents, and Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City (whose temperature would match their big neighbour's) are never hidden, but you can still guess them.
