Explore the capitals of Greece’s 13 regions

The quiz covers the thirteen administrative regions, rather than the older prefectures or Greece’s traditional geographical areas. Mount Athos is outside this regional question pool. Start with ten questions or choose all thirteen for a complete round.

Athens is the capital of Attica and Thessaloniki of Central Macedonia. The less obvious pairings include Komotini for Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Kozani for Western Macedonia, and Lamia for Central Greece.

Island capitals and alternative spellings

The South Aegean regional capital is Ermoupoli on Syros, not Rhodes. Mytilene on Lesbos serves North Aegean, Corfu town serves the Ionian Islands, and Heraklion serves Crete. The markers help distinguish the city from the wider island or island group.

Common alternative spellings are accepted, including Larisa for Larissa, Patra for Patras, Tripolis for Tripoli and Kerkyra for Corfu. Try multiple choice to learn the pairs, then type the names to test your recall.
