Learn the capitals of Germany’s 16 states

Germany’s federal states are called Länder, or Bundesländer. Each has a capital, and the answer is not always its largest city: Wiesbaden is the capital of Hesse, not Frankfurt, and Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, not Cologne.

Start with a 10-question round, or select all 16. The outline shows the state and the dot marks its capital. Multiple choice helps you learn the pairings; typed answers test whether you can recall the city without suggestions.

City-states and familiar alternative spellings

Berlin and Hamburg are both cities and states. Bremen is also a city-state, consisting of Bremen and Bremerhaven, with Bremen as its capital. Berlin is Germany’s national capital as well as a state capital.

Both Munich and München are accepted, as are Hanover and Hannover. You can type Duesseldorf or Saarbruecken without an umlaut. After a round, revisit your missed capitals in practice to strengthen the connections.
