The regions of metropolitan France

This French regions quiz covers the 13-region metropolitan map used since the 2016 regional reform, including Corsica. It does not include the five overseas regions: Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Réunion and Mayotte.

Learn the broad shapes first: Bretagne extends into the Atlantic, Nouvelle-Aquitaine occupies much of the southwest and Grand Est lies along the northeastern border. Île-de-France surrounds Paris, while Corse is the island southeast of the mainland.

Modern regions, not departments or former regions

The quiz uses current names such as Hauts-de-France, Occitanie and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Former regions such as Alsace and Aquitaine are not separate answers. These are regions, not the smaller French departments.

Names on the map are French: Bretagne is Brittany, Normandie is Normandy and Corse is Corsica. Corsica has a special territorial-collectivity status and is included in this familiar 13-region geographic grouping.
