Learn Finland’s 19 regions, including Åland

This Finnish regions quiz covers the maakunnat: 18 mainland regions plus the autonomous Åland Islands. These are not Finland’s former provinces or its wellbeing services counties, which use different divisions.

Lapland occupies the far north, while Uusimaa contains Helsinki on the southern coast. Finland Proper, also known as Southwest Finland, contains Turku. Åland lies offshore to the southwest and counts as one region even though it consists of many islands.

Distinguish the Ostrobothnia and Savo regions

Ostrobothnia, North Ostrobothnia, Central Ostrobothnia and South Ostrobothnia are four separate answers. North Savo and South Savo are also called Northern and Southern Savonia. Use their neighbours and coastlines to learn the differences.

Pirkanmaa contains Tampere, while Tavastia Proper is also known as Kanta-Häme. Zoom into the south to distinguish the smaller regions. Start with ten questions, then select all 19 to test the complete Finnish regional map.
