Learn Finland’s regional centres, from Lapland to Åland

This quiz covers Finland’s nineteen regions, including autonomous Åland. These are the modern regions, not Finland’s former provinces. Begin with ten questions or select all nineteen to work through the full country.

Rovaniemi serves Lapland, Oulu serves North Ostrobothnia and Tampere serves Pirkanmaa. The similarly named Ostrobothnian regions have different centres: Vaasa, Kokkola, Seinäjoki and Oulu are four separate answers.

Finnish and Swedish names, with one special case

Kymenlaakso has two regional centres, Kotka and Kouvola. Its question is explicitly labelled “council seat” and marks Kouvola, where the regional council is based; it does not ask for Kotka. This keeps the location clue and expected answer consistent.

Swedish alternatives are accepted where included, such as Helsingfors for Helsinki, Åbo for Turku, Tammerfors for Tampere and Vasa for Vaasa. Mariehamn also accepts Maarianhamina. Accents are optional in typed answers, including Jyväskylä and Hämeenlinna.
