Population data and source
The 25 answers are Europe’s largest cities by population within their city limits, from Istanbul and Moscow down to Birmingham, with the figures of our European Cities quiz: the latest official counts from each country’s statistics office. Istanbul and Moscow count as European cities, as they do on our map of Europe.
City proper means the city’s own administrative area, not its metro area: Paris is the city of Paris (about 2.1 million), not its region of 12 million. Istanbul’s figure is its metropolitan municipality, which covers the whole province on both sides of the Bosporus.
Stockholm and Copenhagen are left out: our European Cities data gives the size of their urban areas, while the municipalities have 996,264 people (Stockholm, 30 June 2025) and 671,714 (Copenhagen, 1 January 2026), well below the last place in this list.
Figures are from 2021 to 2026. Kyiv and Kharkiv use Ukraine’s last official estimates before the full-scale invasion (1 January 2022); Bucharest and Belgrade use their 2021 and 2022 censuses.
Names count in English, in the local language and with their usual spellings: “Kiev” or “Kyiv”, “Moskva”, “München”, “Warszawa”, “St Petersburg”.
There is no minefield mode: naming a real city outside the list simply gets a note, and the round goes on.
