Longitude data and source
Cities, populations and coordinates come from our European cities map quiz: city-proper populations from national statistics offices. Only the largest city of each country is used, and Istanbul and Moscow count as European, as in that quiz. Each city is placed by the single point used on that map.
No two places are within 0.1° of longitude of each other, so the order is never a near tie. To keep it that way, the list takes the largest cities in turn and leaves out any city within 0.1° of one already chosen: Copenhagen (in line with Rome) is left out.
