Learn Egypt’s 27 governorates

Egypt is divided into governorates rather than states or provinces. This quiz covers all 27, including the compact areas of the Nile Delta and the much larger desert governorates. A familiar city name such as Cairo, Alexandria or Luxor refers to its governorate boundary in this round.

Begin with Matrouh on the northwest coast, New Valley in the western desert, and Red Sea along the eastern coast. North Sinai and South Sinai divide the peninsula to the northeast, while Aswan anchors the southern Nile Valley.

Zoom in to learn the Nile Delta

Several small governorates sit close together around the delta. Separate Gharbia, Monufia and Qalyubia from their neighbours, then use coastal Damietta and Kafr el-Sheikh as reference points. Along the Suez Canal, Port Said, Ismailia and Suez are three different answers.

English transliterations vary: Faiyum is also written Fayoum, Asyut as Assiut, and Sharqia as Al Sharqia. This is a map-clicking quiz, so no spelling is required. Start with ten governorates or choose all 27 for the full test.

How to play

Click the place named above the map. A correct first click earns three points; a second or third attempt earns two or one. After three mistakes, or if you skip, the answer highlights in red. Click it to continue and learn its position.

Use the zoom controls or pinch and drag for smaller areas. At the end, review the map, share your score or play again. Your best result is saved to My Progress.
