Learn the capitals of the Netherlands’ 12 provinces
This quiz covers the twelve provinces in the European Netherlands. The Caribbean special municipalities are not provinces and do not appear in this round. Start with ten questions or select all twelve to test every pairing.
Amsterdam is the national capital, but Haarlem is the capital of North Holland. South Holland’s capital is The Hague, not Rotterdam, while Flevoland’s is Lelystad rather than Almere. These contrasts make provincial capitals a different challenge from simply naming the country’s largest cities.
Den Bosch, Den Haag and other accepted names
For North Brabant, both ’s-Hertogenbosch and Den Bosch are accepted. The Hague also accepts Den Haag and ’s-Gravenhage. Leeuwarden accepts its Frisian name, Ljouwert.
Groningen and Utrecht share their names with their provincial capitals. Other pairs need their own memory hook: Assen for Drenthe, Arnhem for Gelderland, Zwolle for Overijssel and Middelburg for Zeeland. Use multiple choice to learn them, then switch to typed answers for a recall test.
