Find the 12 provinces of the Netherlands

The Netherlands has 12 provinces, and this map quiz includes each one. Holland is not the name of the whole country: North Holland and South Holland are two of those provinces. Amsterdam is in North Holland, while Rotterdam and The Hague are in South Holland.

Use the coast to place Zeeland in the southwest and Friesland in the north. Limburg stretches south along the border, while Gelderland and Overijssel occupy much of the east. Flevoland is a useful central landmark beside the IJsselmeer.

Dutch and English province names

North Brabant, North Holland and South Holland are labelled in English here; their Dutch names are Noord-Brabant, Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland. Friesland is also known by its Frisian name, Fryslân. Each answer represents a province, not a city with the same name.

This quiz covers the provinces of the European Netherlands. Caribbean parts of the Kingdom are not provinces and are outside this round. Try a shorter practice round, or find all 12 for a complete test.

How to play

Click the place named above the map. A correct first click earns three points; a second or third attempt earns two or one. After three mistakes, or if you skip, the answer highlights in red. Click it to continue and learn its position.

Use the zoom controls or pinch and drag for smaller areas. At the end, review the map, share your score or play again. Your best result is saved to My Progress.
