Learn Colombia’s 32 departments

Colombia’s main administrative subdivisions are departments, or departamentos in Spanish. This map quiz covers all 32, including the Caribbean island department of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina. Bogotá is a separate capital district, so it is shown on the map but is not an additional department to guess.

The map ranges from La Guajira in the north to Amazonas in the south. Chocó helps anchor the Pacific side, while Vichada, Guainía and Vaupés form part of the country’s eastern border. Antioquia, Boyacá and Cundinamarca provide useful reference points in the more densely divided interior.

Distinguish the names that are easy to mix up

Cauca and Valle del Cauca are separate departments, as are Santander and Norte de Santander. Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío are three compact neighbouring departments: zoom in to learn their individual outlines rather than treating them as a single area.

The San Andrés archipelago lies northwest of mainland Colombia in the Caribbean. Zoom and pan to select its islands; any mapped island in that department counts as the same answer. Choose ten departments for a shorter round or all 32 to test the complete map.

How to play

Click the place named above the map. A correct first click earns three points; a second or third attempt earns two or one. After three mistakes, or if you skip, the answer highlights in red. Click it to continue and learn its position.

Use the zoom controls or pinch and drag for smaller areas. At the end, review the map, share your score or play again. Your best result is saved to My Progress.
