Learn mainland China’s provincial-level map

This Chinese provinces quiz covers 31 mainland provincial-level divisions: 22 provinces, five autonomous regions and four municipalities. They share a level in the administrative structure but are not all provinces. Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are outside the scope of this round.

The four municipalities are Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing. The five autonomous regions are Guangxi, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Tibet and Xinjiang. Tibet is also known as Xizang. The remaining 22 answers are provinces, including Hainan.

Tell similar names apart

Shanxi and Shaanxi are separate provinces: Shaanxi lies west of Shanxi. Hebei and Henan, and Hubei and Hunan, are also different answers. Use their neighbouring regions and positions to build a mental map instead of relying only on how the names sound.

Begin with large western divisions such as Xinjiang, Tibet and Qinghai, then work east through Sichuan and the central provinces towards the coast. Zoom in for compact municipalities such as Shanghai and Tianjin. Choose a short round to learn a few at a time, or test all 31.
