How the questions are made

Every round is generated fresh from our data: fifteen questions, one per sector, with sectors 1 to 5 easy, 6 to 10 medium and 11 to 15 hard. A challenge link replays exactly the same fifteen questions.

Difficulty comes from how familiar the places are and how close the answers are. Countries are ranked by familiarity, first those on our well-known lists (the familiar countries of our explorer games, the well-known capitals of our world capitals compass quiz, and the ten most populous and ten largest countries), then all others by population, and the ranking is split into thirds for the easy, medium and hard sectors. In comparison questions the right answer is at least 2.5 times the next option in the easy sectors, 1.5 to 2.5 times in the medium ones and only 10 to 50% ahead in the hard ones; for the farthest north capital the lead is at least 15°, 6 to 15° and 2 to 6° of latitude.

Areas and populations come from the pinned CIA World Factbook snapshot used by our ranking quizzes (2024 and 2025 estimates). Land borders and landlocked countries also follow the Factbook, island nations are the countries made up entirely of islands, and continents follow our other world quizzes, based on the UN geoscheme.

Nothing that could be argued is asked. Countries whose continent is a matter of convention (Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cyprus, Egypt, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago and Israel) get no continent questions. Borders that exist only through an overseas territory or Western Sahara (France with Brazil and Suriname, Spain and Mauritania with Morocco, Canada with Denmark) never appear, and neither do borders that depend on a dispute (Serbia with Albania, through Kosovo; India with Afghanistan, through Kashmir). Spain, France and Portugal, which have land in Africa, are never the country that is not in Africa. Areas and populations that depend on disputed land (Morocco, Cyprus, Georgia, Moldova, Somalia, Israel) are not compared, the Caspian countries get no landlocked questions, and Australia, Malaysia, Denmark and Equatorial Guinea no island questions. Capitals that give the answer away (such as Kuwait City or Luxembourg) or are disputed (Jerusalem) are not asked, and Kosovo, Palestine and Taiwan are left out.
