Uses total area (land plus water) in square kilometres from the archived CIA World Factbook, checked 14 September 2026. Only countries are included, not continents or dependent territories.
The Factbook's published total-area figures place the United States ahead of China. Other sources use different water and boundary conventions and may reverse those two. This quiz consistently uses the Factbook figures.
The CIA retired the Factbook in February 2026. This is a fixed historical dataset, preserved by the CC0-licensed factbook.json archive, not a live 2026 area survey.
